Marklin Gauge 1 NBR 'Atlantic' 1021

Marklin 1 gauge clockwork 4-4-2 'Atlantic', lettered for North British Railways, c1919. A very pretty engine- love the rich brown color and the elaborate pinstriping. Note also the lithographed cab controls. It was numbered '1021', but a previous owner painted over the trailing '1', and thus it displays '102'. The clockwork mechanism is trying to work, but after about five turns, the key starts to slip, so that will require some further inquiry.

the overpainting is interesting. As far as I remember, some early locomotives had only 3-digit locomotive numbers, most likely to keep decals the same for the whole range of locomotive-gauges.
Maybe they ran out of 1-gauge decals or they never had them with 1021 in Göppingen and your locomotive has actually an overpainted 1020.

Anyway the clockwork CE 1021 NBR is a nice locomotive and is not that often seen.

Production years according Schiffmann 1919-1928.
In Fullers Bassett-Lowke story it is not listed as sold by BL, so maybe sold over Gamges or others.

1919 ist nicht gerade ein Jahr, in dem man das Erscheinen einer solchen Lokomotive erwarten würde.

Gamage zeigt sie schon 1913 in seinem Katalog. (vergl. Märklin Band 3, S. 270)

Der originale Katalogtext beschreibt auf der Seite 8 aber nur eine Spiritus- Maschine in Spur I, auch wenn augenscheinlich die Uhrwerkmaschine abgebildet ist. (vergl. Gamage´s Christmas Bazaar 1913, David & Charles Reprints Newton Abbot 1974)

In allen drei Antriebsarten finden wir sie dann im französischen Märklin Katalog P 14 von 1914. Weiterhin wird dieser Typ nur in Spur I angeboten, die Spur 0 Freunde müssen noch warten.

Die Bestände dieser Maschine reichen bis in die Nachkriegszeit. Die CE 1021 NBR wird noch in der verkürzten Gesamtpreisliste 1919 ohne Nennung einer Katalogreferenz angeboten.

Anfang 1920 kommt der Katalog O 19 heraus. Hier findet man die Maschine wieder. Allerdings ist sie laut der zugehörigen Preisliste 1920 nicht zur Lieferung vorgesehen. Erst 1921 ist sie wieder zu haben. Sie läuft im Jahre 1928 aus. Im neuen englischen Märklin Katalog E 29 von 1929 ist sie nicht mehr vertreten.
