Spur 0 - Bing » 11-820 heavy current locomotive and lighted passenger cars

A new arrival- O gauge 11/820 heavy current locomotive and two lighted passenger cars. After some cleaning and servicing the locomotive looks good, and does run. When I got it you could not see the lithography on the pilot, covered with many years of dirt. Happily cleaning revealed it was still there, just hiding! A few pieces on the locomotive are missing, the whistle and the diagonal braces and the lamps on the pilot. The most interesting thing for me are the two passenger cars that came with it because they included a nearly complete set of the car lighting components, including the jumper cables between the cars. There is a 10/535 baggage car with marker light, perhaps someone can tell me what the number is for the dining car? For this lighting to work from the high voltage, is there a resistor inside the locomotive?

As for the sleeper and the restaurant car, here some excerpts from a 1928 catalogue reprint:



The operation of high voltage trains is always a bit controversial.

Basically you had the line voltage (in your case 110/120V) and burned a portion of it over carbon filament lamps (the bigger the power demand, the more light bulbs, eg. 1, 2 or 3 in parallel)
A very basic resistor setup enabled the speed control (control is maybe too big a word) over some steps.

The train with all its lights was wired up in series like a christmass tree.
When any of the light bulbs went out, the whole train stopped. Jumpers to shorten the circuit on the locomotive or on the headlights helped with that.



Although very neat to look at, in practise nobody will run trains in this old fashioned ways.
Here in Europe with 230V it is somehow unhealthy to touch the wires. In olden days there was sometimes DC-line voltage and no grounding which made it according to the vendors „completely safe“.

Try to use a DC power supply, the locomotives run somtimes at surprisingly low voltages maybe 20-30 VDC.

It helps to rewire the lights to parallel, if you do not mind the loss of originality.

Edit: we discussed Monorails 2 weeks agp, I would be happy to hear from your Lehmann Vineta and the other Monorail in the background!
